ICE版より“魅力的な何か”が求められている

英国・グラスゴーで開催されたCOP26（国連気候変動枠組条約第26回締約国会議）において、2040年までに内燃機関（ICE）自動車の新車販売をやめることを、30ヶ国以上が承認した。そこに米中独そして日本などが含まれていないのは報道の通りだが、じつはEU内で承認した国は北欧とアイルランド、ベルギー以外のベネルクス、あとは東欧と中欧の一部など、スウェーデンを除けば自動車関連工場をもたない一部地域13ヶ国。スイスは未承認だし、スペインやポルトガル、イタリアやフランスといったいわゆる旧西欧の大半は、日本と同じく内燃機関の2040年以降の可能性を否定していない。

にもかかわらず、日本では「欧州車メーカーはまともなHV(ハイブリッド）を開発できない」という偏った見方が、まことしやかに語られてしまう。欧州で好まれるハイブリッドとは、タクシーを除けば日本車のハイブリッドほど燃費オリエンテッドである必要はなく、CAFE（企業別平均燃費基準）規制で95g/㎞のCO2排出量に引っかからない範囲で、むしろ動的質感やダイナミクス面、快適性でもユーティリティでも、従来のICE版より優れるのか？　そんな加点法ライクな視点で、何かが求められる。

その点、ルノーキャプチャー E-テックインテンスは分かりやすかった。じつは本国でのキャプチャー E-テックには、今回試乗したストロングHV版とPHEVの160ps版があるが、ルノーが独自開発したハイブリッド専用トランスミッションはまったく共通だ。このトランスミッションこそが、ルノーの様々な車種をハイブリッド化するための共用モジュールというわけだ。

仕組みとしては、トランスミッションの4速ギアに36kW（49ps）と15kW（20ps）の大小2基の電気モーターが組み合わされている。速度が上がってくれば当然ICEが動力源となるが、それまで静止状態から加速による走行負荷の大きい間、あるいは減速して充電回生する際は、電気モーターが用いられる。この時、動力源の切り替えを行うのが、各ギアと電気モーターの間に配されたドグ・ギアなのだ。ドグ・ギアとは回転方向に対し垂直に歯が切られているギアのことで、高効率ゆえにレース用には好まれるが、ギクシャクした衝撃を伝えやすいので市販車に用いることはほぼない。だがCPUとアクチュエーターによって高度できめ細かな制御が可能になり、例えばだが、電気で走っている間も、ICE側が速度域に合わせたギアを繋げてスタンバイしている、そんな状態が作り出せるという。
