映画やモードの世界にも影響を及ぼした「ブルックス・ルック」
On press night at the Bunka Costume Museum I was lucky enough to have the Vice President of Global Public Relations for Brooks Brothers, Arthur Wayne, take me on a private guided tour of the exhibition. As we strolled through the gallery, it was surprising how many aspects of American life Brooks Brothers influenced. There was a picture of Andy Warhol, resplendent from head to toe in Brooks Brothers. I found it curious that someone as avant-garde as Andy Warhol would have chosen to wear Brooks Brothers, but in fact Mr. Warhol went straight to Brooks Brothers after receiving his first pay check, a testament to the appeal of the Brooks look. Further along were costume designs for the drama series, Mad Men, and the 2013 movie Gatsby, staring Leonardo DiCaprio, along with a section devoted to design collaborations with Thom Browne, Adidas, Supreme, Junya Watanabe and Kinlock Anderson.
プレス発表の夜、私は幸運にもブルックス ブラザーズのグローバルヴァイスプレジデントのアーサー・ウェイン氏自ら展示会場を案内頂く機会に恵まれました。ギャラリー内を散策していく内にブルックスブラザーズがアメリカンライフに与えた影響力の大きさに驚かされました—全身ブルックス ブラザーズに包まれたきらびやかなアンディー・ウォーホールの写真からは、彼程のアバンギャルドな人物がブルックス ブラザーズを選んだ事に興味を引かれましたが、若かりしウォーホール氏が初任給を受け取ったその足でブルックス ブラザーズに向かったエピソードは、”ブルックス・ルック”の訴求力の高さを物語っていました。会場にはドラマシリーズ『マッド・メン』の衣装デザインや2013年に公開されたレオナルド・ディカプリオ主演の映画『華麗なるギャツビー』、そしてトム・ブラウン、アディダス、シュプリーム、ジュンヤワタナベ、キンロック・アンダーソンとコラボレーションしたアイテムが並ぶコーナーが設けられていました。
As we strolled along, Arthur and I chatted and laughed, sharing stories about growing up with Brooks Brothers. I confided that one of my fondest memories was of finding the illustrated Brooks Brothers catalogue in my mailbox at college. It was almost as good as getting a care package of homemade cookies from my mom. I’d race up to my dorm room and pour over the fashion illustrations of well-dressed gentlemen engaging in genteel pursuits, wondering if there was anything within the pages that I could afford. Finally, there they were, the perfect pair of flannel-lined khakis. What could be better for trekking across campus in the frozen tundra?
会場内を散策し、アーサー氏と共に談笑しながらブルックス ブラザーズと共に成長した思い出のエピソードを共有し合いました。一番の思い出として打ち明けたのはブルックス ブラザーズのイラストカタログを大学時代、下宿先の郵便受けに発見したエピソードでした。母から手作りクッキーの差し入れを受け取るのに匹敵するご褒美でした。カタログを受け取るとすぐさま寮の自分の部屋に戻り、上質さを追求した着こなしのいいジェントルマン達のイラストの中から自分でも購入できる商品はないか探したものです。そこで発見したのがツンドラのごとく凍えるキャンパスを歩くのに最適なフランネル裏地の見事なカーキパンツでした。
Of course, one never really knew what the product would look like when it arrived, due to the fact that the entire catalogue was illustrated, not a single photo in sight. The mystery only added to the anticipation of having that sacred package delivered. Knowing that it was Brooks Brothers was good enough. I wore those khakis nearly every day in the winters, even after I had worn them fountain jumping, resulting in the red flannel running into the khaki fabric. It wasn’t a problem-my school’s colors were red and white anyway.
もちろん、写真ではなくイラストのカタログなので実際の商品は手元に届いてからでないとわかりません。そんな神秘が神聖な小包を受け取る期待に拍車をかけたものでしたが、僕にとってはブルックス ブラザーズの商品という事実だけで充分でした。私は噴水遊び（ファウンテン・ホッピング）で中の赤いフランネル地が表から見えてしまっても冬の間そのカーキパンツをほぼ毎日のように履き続けました。といっても、私の学校のシンボル・カラーは赤と白だったので、まったく問題ではなかったのですが。
