ブルックス ブラザーズのスーツやコートは、歴史的シーンにも数多く登場した

Studying history has always been a passion of mine, so the last section, devoted to Brooks Brothers’ influence on politics and the military was fascinating for me. A picture of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, wearing a Brooks Brothers cape while seated between British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and General Secretary of the Soviet Union Joseph Stalin at the Yalta Conference, hung next to a reproduction of the cape displayed on a mannequin. There was even a picture of Theodore Roosevelt in the uniform he had commissioned Brooks Brothers to make in 1898 when he joined the Rough Riders, before becoming the 26th president of the United States.

歴史を勉強する事は常に僕の情熱の対象だったので、展示会の最後のセクションであるアメリカ政治と軍隊への影響へ捧げられた展示は非常に興味がそそられました。フランクリン・D・ルーズベルト大統領がブルックスブラザーズのケープを着用して英国首相のウィンストン・チャーチルとソ連総書記ヨシフ・スターリンの間に座っているヤルタ会談の写真の隣には、そのケープのレプリカがマネキンに着せられて展示されていました。1898年、セオドア・ルーズベルトが26代目の大統領就任前にラフ・ライダーズへ入隊した際にブルックス ブラザーズに委任して作った制服の写真もありました。

As luck would have it, Arthur and I started our tour of the exhibition in a counter clockwise direction, by chance leaving the best for last. The one item that I knew would be on display was the one I was most looking forward to seeing-President Abraham Lincoln’s overcoat. In 1865 Brooks Brothers created a special coat for its most famous presidential customer, Abraham Lincoln. Too fragile to display, an exact replica was made to share with the public. The coat which Lincoln wore to his second inauguration on March 4, 1865, bears intricate embroidery featuring an eagle with a pennant in its beak and the words, “one country, one destiny.” Sadly, Lincoln was also wearing this coat at Ford’s Theatre 5 weeks later when he was assassinated. Profoundly moved, while standing in front of this great man’s overcoat, I couldn’t help thinking how timely his words still are today in deeply divided America. “One country, one destiny.”

偶然アーサーと私は反時計回りの方向から展示会場を見学しましたが、幸運なことに最高の展示物を最後に残す形となりました。今回の展示で非常に楽しみにしていた作品の一つがエイブラハム・リンカーン元大統領のオーバーコートです。1865年にブルックス ブラザーズは顧客であったかの最も有名な大統領、エイブラハム・リンカーンのために特別にコートを仕立てました。現物は脆く展示に耐えられない為、完璧な複製版が作成されました。リンカーンが1865年3月4日に行われた第二期目の大統領就任式に着用したコートは手の込んだ鷹と「ひとつの国、ひとつの運命」という銘の刺繍が施されていました。残念ながら就任式からわずか5週間後、フォードシアターで暗殺された時にもこのコートを着ていました。この偉大なる人物のオーバーコートを前に深く感銘を受けながら、この銘が今日も未だ分断されているままのアメリカの国情に当てはまっている事のタイミングの良さに思いを馳せていました。「ひとつの国、ひとつの運命」。
