「ブルックス ブラザーズ」アメリカンスタイル200年の歴史に思いを馳せて

Henry Sands Brooks, nicknamed The Disrupter for his innovative spirit, opened Brooks Brothers on April 7, 1818, thereby starting what is now the oldest retailer in America. Henry’s day book is on display at the exhibition, recording the first transaction on April 7, 1818 – a loan of ten pounds to Daniel Merritt, a family friend. It was Henry’s sons who would become the eponymous Brooks Brothers.

1818年の4月7日に革新的な精神の持ち主から”ディスラプター（改革者）”と呼ばれたヘンリー・サンズ・ブルックスは、後にアメリカ史上最も古い小売店として名を馳せる事になるブルックス ブラザーズを開店しました。同展に展示されているヘンリーの台帳によると1818年4月7日、家族ぐるみの友人であったダニエル・メリット氏へ10ポンドの貸付が初めての取引でした。後にヘンリーの息子達がブルックス ブラザーズのエポニム（名祖）となったのでした。

Such was the influence of Brooks Brothers throughout its first 138 years in business, that in 1956 the New York Times declared that, “the Ivy League Look can be traced, leaf by leaf, to Brooks Brothers.” With its offerings of sack suits, oxford cloth button downs, reverse-stripe rep ties, Shetland sweaters and argyle socks, they defined the preppy look. In the 1950s, 70% of suits sold in America were Brooks Brothers.

同社の開業当時から138年目にかけての影響力は1956年にニューヨークタイムズ紙が”アイビーリーグ・ルックの原点はブルックス ブラザーズ”と称した程でした。サックスーツ、オックスフォード地のボタンダウンシャツ、英国式とは逆のストライプのレップタイ、シェットランドセーターにアーガイルソックスの提案はプレッピースタイルを定義づけるものとなりました。この時代（50年代）にアメリカで販売された約70％のスーツがブルックス ブラザーズ製でした。
