At this point, the inner vamp is inserted into the boot, soaked in water, then pulled over and tacked to the last. A molded sole is attached and the boot is placed on a rack to dry for a day. When the leather dries it will form to the last and create a perfect fit. When the boot is dry, the tacks are removed, the inner vamp is removed, and a molded sole is stitched on. The inner vamp is now replaced and sewn into the boot and trimmed. The gusset, or tongue, is trimmed and sewn in as well as the inner lock which connects the toe piece, the gusset and the eyelet facings. Eyelets are added accordingly and the last is inserted again before going to the shoemaker.

During the lasting process a shoemaker will pull the vamps up and tack them to the last, trim the excess leather from the molded sole and hand stitch the toe piece using an overlap stitch. The hand stitching is highly individualized and characteristic of each shoemaking artist. After the toe piece is hand stitched, soles are attached, trimmed and sanded. Finally, conditioners are added to the leather uppers and brushed, with laces added before boxing up the final product.
木型の工程では、靴職人は、つま側を木型に沿って引き伸ばし、鋳型で作られたソールから余分な革を切り取り、つま先部分を手で縫い合わせ、オーバーラップステッチを施します。ハンドステッチは、それぞれの靴職人の個性や特徴がとてもよく表れるところです。つま先部分をハンドステッチで縫い合わせると、ソールを取り付け、トリムし、やすりをかけます。最後に、上部の革にコンディショナーを塗り、ブラシをかけ、靴紐をつけて、箱に入れて出来上がりです。

At the end of the factory tour, Joe measures my feet for a custom pair of Russells and we all say our goodbyes, hoping to see each other again. In answer to the age-old question, “can we go home?” the answer is yes. Although losing my dad and hunting partner made it hard for me to return to this area, I’ll keep them in my heart, and now I’ve made new friends in Suzie, Bill and Joe.
