【Mr.David’s Diary】Prologue：お洒落の基本は”KISS”
“How would you describe your personal style?” That was the question I was asked by a journalist after a fashion show in Milan last season. My answer was short and to the point, “KISS,” I replied. “Keep It Simple Sir.”

I didn’t come to this personal mantra overnight. My personal style has evolved over decades as a result of various influences in my life, from where I grew up, to studying and working in the menswear business for the past thirty-seven years. I’ve worked closely with, and have been influenced by, some of the best designers, stylists, editors and tailors in the world. At the present age of fifty-four, with a wealth of education and experience, I have finally arrived at a personal style that perfectly reflects who I am, and can best be described as keeping it simple, sir.
このパーソナル・マントラには、すぐに辿りついたわけではありません。 故郷で生まれ育った時間、そして37年間メンズウェアビジネスの世界で学び、働いてきた時間の中で受けた様々な影響の結果、私のスタイルは何十年もかけて進化してきたのです。 私はこれまで、世界の優れたデザイナー、スタイリスト、エディター、そしてテーラーたちと密に仕事し、彼らから影響を受けてきました。これらの貴重な経験を経て、54歳になった今、遂に自分らしさを完璧に表現できるスタイルを見つけることができました。それが“Keep It Simple, Sir（シンプルに徹しましょう）”なのです。
Up until the age of twenty-six my personal style was resolutely preppy, although I didn’t think of it as such.
My dad, whose family was of German descent, dressed in the Ivy style, complete with a Princeton haircut. He was an engineer–practical and stern–with little interest in clothes.
He had simple tastes. Clothes to him were utilitarian, designed to be useful and practical. He wore dark suits with narrow, regimental stripe ties, button down collars, horn rimmed glasses and wing tips or penny loafers.

Mom, whose relatives arrived here from Cornwall, England, also liked this style of menswear, so I grew up with a similar, if more relaxed preppy style.
Levi’s 501 jeans, which I would wear swimming in the Wisconsin lake where my grandparents lived, letting them dry on me in the sun so that they would shrink to fit, and khakis, were pretty much the only trousers I wore.
I did, however, have a pair of grey flannels to wear with my navy blazer or Harris Tweed jacket when the occasion called for it.
英国コーンウォールの親類をもつ母は、同様にシンプルなメンズウェアを好んでいました。なので、私もそのような服装で育ちました。ただ、アイビーよりはリラックスしたプレッピースタイルでしたが。 リーバイスの501（よく祖父が住んでいたウィスコンシン湖の中に穿いたまま入って泳ぎ、そのまま太陽で乾かしてシュリンク・トゥ・フィットさせていたものでした）、それとチノパン。ほとんどこの2つしかパンツは穿いていませんでした。式典で必要に迫られたときだけ、ネイビーブレザーやハリスツイードのジャケットに合わせるためにグレーのフランネルパンツを穿いていました。
In the warm months I topped off my Levi’s or khakis with Izod Lacoste tennis shirts.
Izods were the Amercanized version of Lacoste tennis shirts, with longer “tennis tails” in the back. Later, when Ralph Lauren introduced polo shirts, I would not consider wearing one as I firmly believed that the Lacoste were the only authentic tennis shirts.
As for shoes, it was simple–Sperry Topsiders or Chuck Taylors. Clarks’ desert boots were in the mix as well and would later become one of my favorite shoes.
暖かい時季には、リーバイスやチノパンにアイゾッド・ラコステのポロシャツという合わせでした。アイゾッドはラコステのアメリカ版で、裾が背中側だけ長い「テニステール」のポロシャツが特徴的でした。本物のポロシャツはラコステだけと固く信じていたので、後にラルフ ローレンがポロシャツを世に広めたときも着る気にはなりませんでした。足元はいたってシンプル——トップサイダーあるいはチャックテイラー。時にはクラークスのデザートブーツを合わせることもあって、後に大好きな靴のひとつになりました。
When the weather cooled down it was just a matter of adding layers, with Oxford cloth button downs worn over tennis shirts, then a Shetland crew neck, a down vest from L.L. Bean and finally a duffle coat for the coldest days.
As the winters were cold and wet where I grew up, 100 miles north of Chicago, the best choice of footwear was L.L. Bean Maine Hunting Shoes with a shearling insole.
気候が涼しくなってくると、そこに重ね着をしていきます。寒くなるにつれ、ポロシャツの上にオックスフォードＢＤシャツ、次にクルーネックのシェトランドニット、次にL.L.Beanのダウンベスト、そして真冬にはダッフルコートを着込んでいきました。シカゴから北へ100マイル離れた故郷の冬は寒く雨がちだったので、冬の靴はボアのインソールが付いたロング丈のビーンブーツがベストでした。
