下から太いトルクを発しながらトップエンドまできれいに吹け上がる4ℓV8ターボは迫力満点。コンパクトなボディと引き締まったサスペンションの組み合わせは、街乗りからサーキットにいたるすべてのシチュエーションで、ドライバーの意のままに動く高度なスポーツとして楽しませてくれる。
象の背に乗り、異国の文化を学ぶ大人の遊び
分からないことが多いのもすぐ理由が明らかになった。象は今も謎が多い動物なのだという。例えば知能はオランウータンやチンパンジーに次ぐのだそうだ。鳴き声以外に人間には聞こえない周波数で会話していて、それがここ最近の研究で明らかになるなど、まだまだ分からないことは多いらしい。
性格は極めて温厚でとても優しいという。確かに間近で見ると瞳がとても優しげで愛らしい。専門のスタッフはみなアジア系外国人である。不思議に思って尋ねるとその話がまた面白い。まず象のスタッフはみんなタイからやってきた象使いの方々で、タイでは昔から象で運送業を営んでいたことからそういった生業の人が多いのだという。すべてを任せる理由は、それだけの能力があるからで、いくら日本人が勉強をしても、子どもの頃から象と一緒に暮らしてきた彼らには敵わないのだそうだ。象の生態を熟知し、心を通わせることができるから、ここでは他では見られない象のショーが可能になるようだ。
ショーが始まる前になると徐々にお客さんが増えてくる。子ども、女性、年配の夫婦、やっぱり象の人気は幅広い。さすが動物園の人気者である。今回は特別に普段入れない場所にクルマを置かせてもらい、ショーを行うステージまでのパレードを待ち構える。見られる場所は万が一のことを考えて制限されたエリア内となる。
待っていると山の上から象がゆっくりと１頭ずつ並んで歩いてくる。実は事前に園のスタッフから「クルマの前で象に挨拶させましょうか？」と提案があった。挨拶が何かは知らないが「ぜひ！」と答えておいた。すると目の前にやってきた象が、なんと１頭ずつこっちを見ながら鼻を上げて挨拶をしてくれたのだ。上に乗っているスタッフが何やら声をかけただけである。カワイイ！ そして何より賢い！
象のパレードのあとはステージで色々なショーを見る。色々ある中で一番驚いたのが象が絵を描くというもの。正直、我々よりも上手い（笑）。そしてその後にお楽しみの象ライド。決まったステージ内をぐるりと回ってくれる。一度に大人２名や大人２名＋子ども１人ぐらいまで乗れるそうで、台の上で順番を待つ。イスが用意されていてそこに座る。もちろんスタッフも一緒に乗る。椅子に座るとゆっくりと歩行開始。もの凄くゆっくり歩いてくれているのだが、高い分そこそこ怖い。肌に触ったりもできるので硬めの皮膚を撫でたりしながらぐるりとステージを回る。
周囲を見ると子どもたちが象の鼻に餌を渡して遊んでいたりする。象の楽園、こんな風景を日本で見られるとは正直思っていなかった。子どもはもちろん楽しめるし、大人も動物好きなら興奮するだろう。
結局午後のショーも観覧。間の時間で他の動物を見て回る。気付けば夕暮れまで園内で遊んでしまった。
行きの道中では「もしアストンマーティンが象に踏まれたら……」なんて冗談も言っていたが、帰りには「あんなに賢いならもっと近くでも……」なんて意見まで出始めた。楽しい以上に勉強になる、家族で遊べる週末のアクティビティとして強く推したい。
