To begin, allow me to state clearly that I am not a John Lennon scholar. I do, however, know my hometown of New York City, the city John loved.

His New York story begins in 1970 when he moved here to start anew with his wife Yoko Ono.

There are many forces which brought John Lennon to New York. His mother passed away right as they were rehabilitating their relationship. His father had recently tried to extort him for money, making a failed attempt at a recording career. A little earlier in 1969, The Beatles were quietly disbanding.

New York was the perfect refuge for John to forget the stress of his former life, while devoting himself to family life at home with Yoko and their new child, Sean.

Though John had previously had a child from his marriage to Cynthia Powell, it was when The Beatles were near the apex of their global fame, that he left his wife and child to perform with the band to enjoy a rather hedonistic lifestyle. Sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, as they say.

His second child, Sean, would grant John a new lease on life and give him the joy of fatherhood that had always eluded him before. New York would provide John and Yoko with the convenience and anonymity they needed to devote themselves to family life, as well as their musical endeavors together.

On his final day on this earth, December 8, 1980, John felt optimistic about his creative future with his wife, Yoko. He had recently learned that their album, “Double Fantasy” had gone gold. Sadly, the world would lose John Lennon later that night.
