歴史の重み漂う「ガーデンコート」でのアフタヌーンティで至福のひとときを

パレスホテルのエントランスをくぐると、目の前に現れるのが1909年の改装当時から多くの人々でにぎわうレストランエリア「ガーデンコート」だ。四方を囲む大理石の柱と、高い天井のガラスドームに吊るされたクリスタルのシャンデリアの数々は、まさに圧巻の一言。まるで宮殿のようにラグジュアリーかつ荘厳な雰囲気の中で、宿泊者たちが朝食やアフタヌーンティ、プリフィクスランチを愉しむことができるのだ。

なかでもオススメなのが「シグネチャー・ティー」だ。最初に出てくるサンドイッチ系おつまみから、スコーンやミニケーキなどのスイーツ系まで品数はかなり豊富で、メンズでも満腹になるボリューム感。せっかくならシャンパン付きで愉しむことをおすすめしたい。

パレスホテルに宿泊したら、是非一度は足を運びたいバーが「パイド・パイパー・バー」だ。
小さな入り口を入ると、1909年にホテルがリニューアルした記念に画家のマックスフィールド・パリッシュに依頼したという巨大壁画が出迎えてくれる。6000ドルの報酬を得てマックスフィールドが制作したというこの壁画は、彼のキャリアの中でも大作のひとつと言われ（そのサイズ、なんと6×16フィート！）、1世紀以上にわたりパレスホテルのバーカウンターの背後でその存在感を放ってきた。
ドイツのハーメルンの町から市民を導いたパイド・パイパーからインスピレーションを得て描かれたもの。絵の中には、妻や愛人、2人の息子、そしてパリッシュ自身がパイド・パイパーとして登場し、27人の表情が描かれている。
その他、天空に光が差し込む屋内温水プールやフィットネスセンターも滞在中に立ち寄りたい。旅の息抜きがラグジュアリーな気分で出来ること間違いなしだ。
