複雑機構の開発に情熱を注ぎ唯一無二の腕時計を創造する
“キング・オブ・ダイヤモンド”の異名をもつハリー・ウィンストンは、1989年に高級時計市場に参入を果たした。そしてファーストモデルの1つで、早くも超絶な複雑機構を実現してみせた。2つのレトログラード機構が備わる、永久カレンダーである。以来、どこにもない独創的な機構をもつ時計の数々を生み出してきた。このモデルも、時計製作に懸けるブランドの情熱から生まれた。
2009年にスタートした、イストワール・ドゥ・トゥールビヨンの節目となる第10作目。シリーズ名を直訳するとトゥールビヨンの歴史となり、同複雑機構の歴史に残り、歴史を変える独創性を目指す。このモデルにおける歴史的偉業は、一目瞭然である。巨大な横長レクタンギュラーの四隅には、それぞれトゥールビヨンが備わる。その数は、シリーズ最多。すなわち、4つのトゥールビヨンを搭載する腕時計である。
それぞれの調速は、まず上下2つをペアとしてディファレンシャルギアで統合・平均化される。ケースは巨大だが、上下のトゥールビヨンの間のスペースは限られる。そこでディファレンシャル機構を担う歯車には筒カナに似た細長い構造が採られた。左右の調速は、中央に位置するディファレンシャルギアで統合・平均化し、高精度を実現する。さらに各トゥールビヨンは、1周36秒で高速回転し、重力の影響の平均化をさらに促している。キャリッジの回転方向を、通常とは逆の反時計回りとしたのもユニークである。
4つのトゥールビヨンを高速で動かすためのパワーは、上下二層に重ねた計4つの香箱が供給する。ただ数を増やすだけではなく、3.2時間で1回転という異例の高速で働かせることで、香箱の運動エネルギーを高めて、世界最多の4つのトゥールビヨンの動きを安定させた。
