ウィスコンシンで3代続くファミリーシューメーカー「ラッセルモカシン」
I learn that Russell Moccasin is just a few blocks south and pull into their parking lot with only a minute to spare before my appointment. The ivy-covered building is much smaller than I had imagined. As I walk up to the front door I get a friendly wave through the window from Bill Fabricius and am met inside by his sister Suzie, both third generation owners of Russell Moccasin, along with Joe Gonyo, Vice President of Operations. Suzie is resplendent in her black, knee-high Suzie Boots. After getting acquainted, she shows me some family pictures and explains the history of Russell Moccasin.
ラッセルモカシンは数ブロック南だと聞き、約束の時間の1分前に、その駐車場にたどり着きました。蔦の絡まる建物は、想像していたよりもだいぶ小さく感じました。フロントドアに向かって歩いていると、ビル・ファブリチウスが窓からフレンドリーに手を振ってくれました。中に入ると彼の姉のスージーがビルに紹介してくれました。二人は、オペレーション担当のジョー・ゴニョと共に、現在ラッセルモカシンを率いる、3代目オーナー達です。紹介を受けた後、スージーは、家族写真を何枚か見せてくれ、ラッセルモカシンの歴史を説明してくれました。
The Russell Moccasin company began in 1898 when Will Russell had made the first pair of boots for the then burgeoning Wisconsin logging business. Suzie and Bill’s Grandfather, Bill Gustin, a graduate of Ripon College, joined the company as a salesman from 1922-1926 after turning down Curly Lambeau’s offer to play for the Green Bay Packers, as there was no money in professional football. Bill Gustin went on to manage the company for two years before buying it in 1929. Being an avid hunter and fisherman, he recognized a market for sportsmen in need of the highest quality hand-lasted boots and shoes and introduced the iconic Russell Birdshooter. Bill’s son in law, Ralph Fabricius, Suzie and Bill’s father, joined the company in 1956 and runs it to this day.
ラッセルモカシンという会社は、1898年に、ウィル・ラッセルが当時急成長していたウィスコンシンの伐木業のためのブーツを初めて作ったのが始まりです。スージーとビルの祖父で、リポン大学卒のビル・ガスティンは、カーリー・ランボーからグリーンベイパッカーズに入団しないかという話があったものの、プロフットボール界はお金がないという理由でそのオファーを蹴って、1922年から1926年にラッセルモカシンの営業担当として働きました。ビル・ガスティンはその後、2年間経営に携わり、1929年に同社を買収しました。熱心なハンターであり釣り人だったビルは、高品質の手作りのブーツと靴を必要としているスポーツマンの市場があることに目をつけ、ラッセルモカシンのアイコン的ブーツ「バードシューター」を誕生させました。その後、ビルの義理の息子で、スージーとビルの父、ラルフ・ファブリチウスは、1956年に入社し、今日も経営を行っています。
As Suzie walks me over to the factory floor, she explains the true moccasin construction used by Russell in which each layer of leather, or vamp, completely wraps around the foot and the boots are constructed from the bottom up. Inner vamps, which look like a leather sock, are treated with silicon and add an additional layer of waterproofing. Individual lasts, or molds, are created for each custom order based on measurements of the customer’s feet. The lasts are then used to shape the boot for a perfect fit.
スージーが工場を案内し、ラッセルが開発した、レザーのそれぞれの層やつま革が、完全に足を包み込み、ブーツが底から組み立てられる、真のモカシンの構造を説明してくれました。革の靴下のようにも見える、インナーのつま革は、シリコンでコーティングされ、さらにもう一層、防水処理が施されます。それぞれの木型やモールドは、それぞれ顧客の足の寸法に合わせたカスタムメイドです。木型は、その人の足に完璧にフィットするブーツを作るのに使われます。
