ベルトーネがデザインした“ディーノ”

近年、フェラーリ（ディーノ） 308GT4（以下GT4）がクラシックカーマーケットで再評価されている。フェラーリが経営体質改善のために取り組んだディーノシリーズは比較的廉価なプライスレンジへの挑戦であった。メインである12気筒のフラッグシップとはそのマーケティングも異なっていた。

長くロードカーのスタイリングに関してはエンツォ・フェラーリとの”密約”によってピニンファリーナが独占していた中で、GT4においてライバルたるベルトーネのデザインが採用されたことは当時関係者を驚かせた。もちろんピニンファリーナもその事実に大きく動揺したと言われる。その真相は今となっては不明であるが、エンツォ自身がこのプロジェクトを大いに推したということは事実であった。彼が重用し、フェラーリのゼネラルマネージャーに任命したピエロ・フサーロ（1975～79にゼネラルマネージャーを務める）はこう証言してくれた。

「エンツォはヌッチオ・ベルトーネ（ベルトーネのトップ）をたいへん気に入っていたし、このモデルに思い入れが強かった。その決定に関しては親会社であったフィアットの推しもありましたしね。エンツォは私に、この308GT4を北米でしっかりと売るように強く命じました」　

フェラーリは246GTで、エンジンをフィアットが製造し、ボディをスカリエッティが製造するというスキームを確立し、量産への舵を切った。しかし、それはうまく回らなかった。そこで、量産に長けたベルトーネが選ばれたというのもひとつの理由であろう。当時、ディーノエンジンを搭載したフィアットディーノ・クーペをベルトーネは製造していたし、ベルトーネにとってもフェラーリの生産は願ってもないことであった。
