誰よりもこのコラムを通じて紹介するに十分な資格を有する「サルトリア チッチオ」や店主の上木氏を早く紹介したいということで、2018年10月に予定されていた、ヴィターレ バルベリス カノニコのフランネル・ナイトソウルパーティーを口実に、スーツを依頼しました。東京のアトリエで、上木さんに丁寧に提案いただきながら採寸をしてもらったその日は、とても暑くて湿気が多かったことを覚えています。
In anticipation of introducing Sartoria Ciccio and the owner Ueki san who deserves an honorary introduction in this column, I took advantage of the Flannel Seoul Part that was to be hosted by Vitale Barberis Canonico back in October 2018, and commissioned that double breasted suit. Thanks to Ueki san’s special consideration, he took my measurements at his atelier in Tokyo. It was a hot and humid summer day.
上木氏や「サルトリア チッチオ」と触れ合った時間は長くありませんでしたが、とても印象深い経験でした。これと関連して記憶に残る経験について紹介します。ソウルの「Villa del Corea」を通じて「サルトリア チッチオ」のスーツをはじめて依頼した時の仮縫いの過程を写真撮影しておきましたが、たまたま知人たちに見てもらったことがあります。彼らは文筆業で高価なスーツを着る必要もそれほどなかったのですが、写真を見ただけで「こんな美しいスーツなら僕も作ってみたい」というリアクションを示していました。ビスポークスーツの作りや特徴、必要性をさほど分からなくとも、美しいシルエットや体になじむ着心地の良い「サルトリア チッチオ」のスーツを見るだけで、そのような反応を示したのです。
Time spent with Ueki san at Sartoria Ciccio was not too long, but it was certainly a memorable experience. I shared the pictures of the fitting process that took place at Villa del Corea in Seoul with my friends, a group of writers, by chance. Although their lifestyle as writer doesn’t give them a lot of opportunities to wear a suit and an expensive suit is not necessarily on their shopping list, they eagerly expressed their strong desire of owning such a beautiful suit just by looking at the pictures. Even to the eyes of somebody who wouldn’t necessarily understand the structural characteristics, nor the merit of a bespoke suit noticed the beautiful silhouette and fit.
「サルトリア チッチオ」の仕立てを経験しながら、上木氏の仮縫い過程は他のサルトリアとは違うと感じました。普通は仮縫いの服を試着して簡単な確認と採寸をした後仕上がり、というほとんどのサルトとは異なり、上木氏の仮縫いの過程は長かったです。せっかちな人なら苛立ちを感じるかもしれません。上木氏は仮縫いの服を試着した顧客を多様な角度からチェックし、繊細な手さばきで微調整を繰り返していきます。その過程は無口の上木氏の性格のおかげで、崇高だと感じるほどの経験を与えてくれます。噂によれば、上木氏はアイロンのかけ方も普通とは違うそうです。相対的に低い温度でアイロンを加熱し、数十回もアイロンを動かしながら、繊細で精巧に誠意を尽くしてかけるそうです。
Throughout my experience with Ueki san, I felt his fitting process is different from the other sartorias. Commonly, most Sartos would fit their clients, check the measurements and briefly discuss details, and then the garment is finished. Ueki san’s process was longer that would potentially make the impatient irritated. Ueki san checks the fitting from so many different angles and delicately adjusts the fine details. Ueki san being a man of few words, I almost felt the process was a sacred act. Rumors say Ueki san’s ironing method is unique, too. He delicately and precisely glides the low-heated iron, taking his time going over the garment numerous times. An act that speaks for his sincere dedication to his craft.
