My mother apprenticed under Renzo in Florence for 5 years after college in the late 1960’s, before coming to New York to start a restoration studio with him. While apprenticing, she often asked to be taken to his tailor on the Ponte Vecchio in lieu of a salary. My mother dressed in a way that was always contemporary yet classic. She would often wear just her jeans and an old sweatshirt with handsewn Polo moccasins, as her profession in paintings conservation required her to use harsh chemicals and solvents.

What this influence from an early age taught me, is that clothing is not just a utilitarian uniform, as it was for my father. The bespoke Florentine influence from my mother and godfather taught me that clothing serves as an extension of our personality and imagination. These two principles are what inform my way of dressing today.
