The Permanence of Memory

Growing up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, there is a sweet smell from the leaves of Central Park. Intoxicating. It surrounds everything.

I learned to love menswear from an early age. Among the things I have done – I’ve worked in Hong Kong at The Armoury, which at its beginnings fused Japanese and Italian sensibilities perfectly. I created my own line of men’s dress shirts. That experience gave me the ability to speak with authority about clothing. And I now work at Paul Stuart, where the role models in my life bought their clothes. By the way, I also speak and write fluent Japanese, which I learned thanks to the East Asian Language department at The University of Pennsylvania.

My Godfather, Renzo Baldaccini, was born in Florence, Italy on December 27, 1912. He started his career at an antique book shop. And later became a renowned architect working for the famed Rosario Candela. He employed my mother in the same building that we lived in, so he would baby sit me after school when I was growing up. Though I was only about 7 years old, I still retain many memories of him. He would always let me open his mail with his old brass letter opener. I remember vividly the small triangle shaped swatches that would spill out onto the table. Every summer in my childhood to mid-teens my mother took me to Italy, often times with Renzo.

When we would arrive in Florence, the first thing Renzo would do upon arriving, is buy socks. Knee length “filo di scozia” with a seam running down the back. Clothing, shoes, and shirts were all bespoke. He would order everything over the phone, since all his tailors and his shoe maker had his pattern on file. Renzo wore tailored clothing constantly no matter where he was or what he was doing. He grew up as a child in early 20th century Florence when clothing was handmade by necessity. His bespoke clothes lacked any sense sense of pretentiousness.
