After doing seven major shows my first season in Milan I fell in with the Armani crowd. Most of my friends worked for Armani as photographers, designers, sales people and models. Through them I gained access to the Armani factory store, minimalist heaven, and started dressing for the job of a European fashion model.

Leonardo de Vinci believed that simplicity was the ultimate sophistication. Fashion in Milan in the ’90s was all about post-modern minimalism with its simplicity, clean lines and monochromatic palettes. The emphasis was on drape, form and proportions, achieved through the use of innovative fabrics. Deconstructing clothes to a featureless austerity added to the anonymity of the style. The cuts, quiet play of tones and clean lines made minimalism accessible to anyone in almost a generic way, giving rise to label recognition as one of the few distinguishing features.

The idea was to be able to blend in with the crowd. As my friend, Andrew Silvius, Regional Account Manager for Emporio Armani told me, “In the words of Signore Armani, ‘Eliminate the superfluous. Elegance doesn’t mean being noticed, it means being remembered.'” By the end of my first fashion season in Milan I had adopted the uniform of the minimalist fashion crowd. I was wearing black from head to toe and fit right in whether I was shooting on location in Milan, London or Paris. I had become a member of the minimalist style tribe.
