オイル充填で精度を増した機械式の概念を覆す超絶機構
2010年に創業したベルギー生まれの時計ブランド「レッセンス」。機械式時計の現状を打破するという信念のもと、’13年に発表した「Type3」は、世界で初めてオイルを充填した機械式時計として登場し、同年のジュネーブ時計グランプリにてオロロジカル・レヴェレイション賞に輝く。その後継機にあたるのが本作だ。
第1作目の「Type1」から同社が一貫して取り入れてきたのは「レッセンス・オービタル・コンベックス・システム（ROCS）」と呼ばれる自社開発のパーツユニット。同ユニットは軌道に乗って互いを追いかけるように文字盤が動き続けることを可能にする機構で、その最大のメリットはより効果的に時間を伝えることにある。
そして「Type3」で初めて採用したのがディスプレイユニットを満たす35.7㎖のオイルだ。機械式時計の内部に液体の油を充填することは危険を伴うが、同社の製作チームは機械の部屋とオイルの部屋を完全に分離した2チャンバー（室）・システムでこのリスクを回避。下部のチャンバーは自動巻き機構が占有し、上部のチャンバーは35.7㎖のオイルにROCSのユニットが浸かっている状態となる。
これだけではムーブメントとROCSの間に直接のつながりがなくなるが、マグネティック・トランスミッションを用いてモジュール同士を連結。マイクロサイズの磁石を上部と下部のチャンバーに複数備え、互いが引き合う力を利用するのである。さらにオイルの体積変動を相殺する7つのベローズ・システムも採用。油の特性である温度による体積変動を相殺するため、ベローズと呼ばれる7つの小さな“ふいご”からなる機構が搭載され、それぞれのベローズが収縮することによりこれに対応する。
裏蓋の操作により、文字盤上の時・分・秒・日付・曜日表示が、まるで生き物のように滑らかに動き続けるさまは壮観。機械式時計の概念を覆す1本だ。
