BMW i3がデビューしてから7年経つが、その理想主義的なクルマ作りはいまだ魅力的だ。それどころか、新しいEVが登場する度にi3の独自性はますます高まってきているとすら感じる。

まずボディ構造が斬新だ。アルミをふんだんに使ったシャーシとカーボン製ボディというコストに糸目を付けない贅沢な構造が生みだしたのは、ほぼ同じ容量のバッテリーを積む日産リーフより約200kgも軽い車重。クルマにとって軽さが加速性能、ブレーキ性能、ハンドリング、燃費（電費）などすべてに貢献する絶対的正義であるのは言うまでもない。後部に積んだモーターで後輪を駆動するRRという駆動方式や観音開き式ドアもユニークだ。

　ユニークと言えば、バッテリーを使い切ってしまったときのためにオプションで発電用エンジンを搭載できるのも面白い。EVモデルの航続距離は360kmだが、排気量647ccの発電用小型2気筒エンジンと9ℓの燃料タンクを備えたレンジ・エクステンダー仕様を選べば航続距離はさらに約100km伸びる。小型エンジンによる発電量は限られるため動力性能はがくりと落ちるが、ガソリンさえ入れれば充電器のある場所まで走って行ける。EVに付きもののバッテリー切れによる立ち往生の不安が解消されるのは大きなメリットだ。
