Milk and Sugar~

David’s Diary」。

Milk and Sugar

Too hot to get dressed? As the mercury rises and the oppressive humidity wilts the stiffest resolve of gentlemen to be well dressed, there is a solution to looking sharp and staying cool – seersucker. This summer I set out to beat the heat with a little help from my friends at Vitale Barberis Canonico (VBC) and Sarto Ginza.

When seersucker was originally traded in India through the East India Company, during the 1600s, it was known by the locals as “shirushaker,” a combination of the East Indian variation of the Persian words “shir” meaning milk and “shaker” meaning “sugar,” of the unrefined pure cane type.

It was a colorful and accurate way to describe the original pattern of tan and white stripes, as well as the combination of smooth-like-milk and rough-like-sugar textures of the puckered fabric.  The British took a liking to the fabric which they called seersucker and it quickly became popular throughout the British colonies, where the climate was hot and muggy.

Milk and sugar was used to describe the original color and texture of seersucker fabric.

While seersucker was imported to Europe in the 18th century the fabric didn’t become popular in the United States until the early part of the 20th century when New Orleans workwear manufacturer Joseph Haspel Sr. started using the railroad striped fabric to mass produce seersucker suits which became popular in that region due to their comfort in warmer weather.

Legend has it that while promoting his suits at a convention in Boca Raton, Florida, Haspel walked into the ocean up to his neck in his seersucker suit.  He got out, hung the suit to dry that afternoon and proceeded to wear it to dinner that evening, looking both cool and sharp.

Brooks Brothers also helped to popularize seersucker in the 1920s when it was worn by undergraduate students and professors alike across the U.S. and particularly at Ivy League schools.  Although students and Hollywood stars such as Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird were wearing seersucker, it was the Duke of Windsor who elevated this modest fabric to a new level of warm weather elegance.  While living in the Caribbean islands he was often seen wearing his three patch pocket seersucker suit.

Traditionally seersucker was made from cotton and silk, giving way to mostly cotton.  The characteristic puckering is created by the slack tension weaving process in which two warp yarns are used at different tensions.  The puckered nature of seersucker allows more air to circulate and keeps one cool.  It also has the benefit of not needing to be ironed.  The downside of cotton seersucker is that it loses its shape, especially in the knees and elbows.  Cotton doesn’t breathe very well nor does it wick moisture away from the body.  Unfortunately it also absorbs and retains odor.

Fast forward to today when Italian fabric mill Vitale Barberis Canonico has developed a light weight 100% wool seersucker fabric that eliminates all the negative attributes of cotton.  The fabric weighs in at 270 grams per square meter, or about 9.5 ounces.  Being woven from 100% wool, the fabric breathes better than cotton, has natural stretch, wicks moisture away from the body to keep one cool and is naturally odor resistant.
