Making Brioni’s special jacket
MEN’S EX誌上やイベントでも長年お馴染みのお洒落モデル、Mr.Davidが、自身のスタイルの成り立ちとポイントを語る「Mr. David’s Diary」。デビッド自らのスタイル哲学、「Keep it Simple,sir」(シンプルに徹しましょう）略して「KISS」の真髄を掘り起こしていきます。今回は、ブリオーニのジャケットを、イタリア・ペンネの工房とリモートで繋ぎ、PCを通じてマスターテーラーのアドバイスをもらいながらオーダーするというスペシャル体験に挑戦！
Brioni – the mere mention of the luxury menswear brand evokes images of the elegance and glamour of the golden age of Roman cinema. Founded in Rome in 1945 by master tailor Nazareno Fonticoli and entrepreneur Gaetano Savini and named after the Brionian archipelago in the Adriatic Sea, Brioni would reimagine the British tailored suit and define the Roman look.
世界屈指のラグジュアリーメンズウェアブランド、ブリオーニ。ローマの撮影所から数々のヒットが生まれたイタリア映画全盛期の、エレガントでグラマラスなスタイルが特徴です。アドリア海に浮かぶブリオーニ島をブランド名の由来とし、マスターテーラーのナザレノ・フォンティコリと事業家のガエタノ・サヴィーニによって、1945年にローマにて創業されました。当時主流だったイギリスのテーラードスーツを見直し、ローマンスタイルを新たに定義したと言われています。
The Roman look would forgo the heavily structured, strong shoulders and stiff canvasing of the military inspired look of British tailoring. In its stead, Brioni set out to create a softer and lighter suit with lightly padded, softly angular shoulders, medium length and a slightly higher button stance to create a lean and refined silhouette. The understated elegance of Brioni would come to epitomize the sweet life in Rome and soon became closely associated with the allure of Hollywood..
ローマンスタイルとは、イギリス式テーラリングの軍服に影響を受けた構築的な力強いショルダーラインや硬い芯を使ったスタイルとは対照的なものです。ブリオーニは、パットを薄めにしてショルダーラインに丸みを持たせ、ミディアム丈にしてボタン位置を若干高めにした、よりソフトでライト、細身で洗練されたシルエットのスーツを作り始めました。このブリオーニの控えめなエレガンスは、瞬く間に「ローマの甘い生活」を象徴するスタイルとなり、ハリウッドスターたちとも密接な関係が築かれるようになります。
Brioni started dressing American film icons Clark Gable and John Wayne and later British stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Irish legend, Pierce Brosnan, who invariably wore Brioni in his role as James Bond in four 007 films. Most recently it’s Brad Pitt who is Brioni’s house ambassador and whose self- confidence, charm and timeless magnetism convinces me that it’s time to update my image and give it an edge. To this end, I made my way to the Brioni flagship store in Ginza in hopes of capturing a little of that Hollywood swag that only Brioni can provide.
ブリオーニは、クラーク・ゲーブルやジョン・ウェインといったアメリカの映画俳優たちの衣装に始まり、後にイギリスの映画スターのアンソニー・ホプキンス、アイルランド出身で、映画『007』シリーズでは4作においてジェームズ・ボンド役を務めたピアース・ブロスナンの衣装を手掛けました。一番最近では、ブリオーニのブランドアンバサダーとしてブラッド・ピットを起用しています。ブラッド・ピットの、溢れる自信とかっこよさ、いくつになっても人を惹きつける人間的な魅力が、今日ブリオーニが描くブランドの理想像です。それを見て、私も自分のイメージをアップデートしてみようと思い、銀座にあるブリオーニの旗艦店に向かいました。ブリオーニだけが実現できるハリウッド風のかっこよさを少し取り入れられたらと期待しながら。
Brioni offers its customers a unique bespoke experience involving a virtual consultation with Chief Master Tailor Angelo Petrucci via live video streaming from Brioni’s atelier in Penne, Italy. Arriving at my appointment, Regional Tailor Kanehara Takamasa san meets me at the front door and leads me upstairs to a comfortable leather couch facing an enormous hi-def flatscreen TV where maestro Angelo Petrucci is already waiting for me. Angelo is charming in that uniquely Italian way, his enthusiasm and passion inspiring me to remain standing and engage with him as he gets a feel for who I am and what I do. With an extensive archive of luxurious and exclusive fabrics to choose from, Angelo instinctively selects several fabrics that he thinks will be suitable for my image and lifestyle.
ブリオーニは、顧客に唯一無二のビスポーク体験を提供しています。イタリアのペンネにあるブリオーニの工房とビデオを繋ぎ、チーフマスターテーラーのアンジェロ・ペトルッチによるバーチャルコンサルテーションを取り入れています。私が予約の時間に到着すると、リージョナルテーラーの金原孝昌さんが入口で出迎えてくれ、2階に案内してくれました。そこには座り心地の良さそうなレザーのソファーが置かれ、目の前の大きな高画質フラットスクリーンテレビには、アンジェロ・ペトルッチが映っていました。アンジェロは、イタリア人特有のチャーミングさを持ちつつも、熱心に、そして情熱的に、私がどんな人物でどんな仕事をしているのかを知ろうとしてくれたので、私はそれに応えようと、立ったまま会話に夢中になりました。アンジェロはそれから、ブリオーニの持つエクスクルーシブなラグジュアリー生地の膨大なアーカイブの中から、私のイメージとライフスタイルに合うものを数種類、直観的に選んでくれました。
Maestro Kanehara san finds the corresponding swatches of fabric and places them before me. As I examine the swatches, Angelo proudly describes the meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship that goes into a bespoke Brioni suit. The soul of each suit requires 220 steps with over 6,000 carefully hidden stitches which ensures that the jacket hugs the neck and shoulders perfectly while the lapels roll gracefully. Even the buttonholes require fifteen minutes of hand stitching each.
マエストロ・カネハラさんが該当する生地のスワッチを見つけ、私に合わせました。私がそれを吟味していると、アンジェロが、ブリオーニが誇るビスポークスーツのディテールへのこだわりやクラフツマンシップについて説明してくれました。ブリオーニでは、１着のスーツを仕立てるのに220もの工程があり、ジャケットの首周りと肩を完璧に形作り、ラペルを優雅に折り返すために、6千以上もの隠れたステッチが手作業により注意深く施されています。ボタンホールを一つ作るのにも、15分の手作業を要するそうです。
After selecting the fabric, Angelo guides me through the selection of linings, buttons and even a customized label, all the while making mental notes about my personal style and how I present myself–information he will use to customize the jacket he will design for me. Angelo and I say our goodbyes and Maestro Kanehara san takes over, taking careful measurements and notes, recording them to be sent to Penne where a custom pattern will be made and a first sample sent back to Tokyo for further refinement.
生地を選んだ後、アンジェロは、裏地やボタン、さらにはカスタムのラベルについても説明してくれました。アンジェロは、私のパーソナルスタイルや、自分をどう見せたいかというイメージなど、ジャケットのカスタムデザインに必要な情報を全て頭に入れた様子で、ここで私と別れました。その後、マエストロ・ カネハラさんによる採寸がありました。注意深くとられたメモは全てペンネの工房に送られ、型紙が作成されます。選んだ生地に似た素材を利用したファーストサンプルができると東京に送り返され、さらに調整されます。
Six weeks later I am back at the Brioni boutique in Ginza for the first fitting. Maestro Kanehara san is focused like a laser, making small adjustments in the mockup, stepping back and circling around me, checking the balance, then moving in to make more adjustments. The pride and dedication to his craft are evident throughout the process and I am almost sorry when the fitting is over as I am so enjoying the process.
6週間後、私は銀座のブリオーニの店舗に、最初のフィッティングに行きました。マエストロ カネハラさんは、鋭い眼差しで、一歩下がったり、私の周りをぐるりと回ったりしながらバランスを確認しては、試作品に細かな調整を加えます。カネハラさんのものづくりに対する誇りと真摯な姿勢が確かに感じられて、このプロセス自体が私は楽しく、終了した時には残念に感じられたほどでした。
Another six weeks pass when I get a message that my jacket is finished. I can barely contain my excitement when I walk into Brioni and Maestro Kanehara san slips the jacket over my shoulders. The fitting is perfect and a testament to Kanehara san’s skill, while the finish on the wool fabric makes it feel like cashmere. Angelo is present on the live video feed from Italy and explains to me that he created my jacket based on Brioni’s Brunico model but with a lighter construction–unlined, with a particularly light canvas, relaxed shoulders and eight-centimeter lapels. He even lowered the button stance by one centimeter, perhaps recognizing the type of classic tailoring I was wearing during our last two meetings.
さらに6週間が過ぎた頃、ジャケットができたとの知らせを受けました。ブリオーニの店内に入り、マエストロ カネハラさんが私の肩にジャケットを滑らせた瞬間に、私の気分はとても興奮しました。ジャケットが完璧にフィットしたのです。これはカネハラさんの技術が確かだという明白な証拠です。加工されたウール素材がカシミアのように感じられました。アンジェロが、ビデオ通話でイタリアから参加し、私のジャケットはブリオーニの「ブルニコ」モデルをベースにしつつも、裏地をつけないより軽いコンストラクションにし、特に軽い芯を使用したこと、肩はリラックスさせ、ラペルは８センチにしたことを話してくれました。ボタン位置を１センチも下げているのは、おそらくその前の2回のミーティング時に私が着ていたクラシックなテーラリングのスーツを見てそうしたのでしょう。
This is the essence of the bespoke experience–creating a one-of-a-kind garment that reflects not only the image and craftsmanship of the atelier, but also taking into account each customer’s physical characteristics as well as his personality. From beginning to end, the Brioni bespoke process was as seamless as it was fun.
これこそが、ビスポーク体験の本質なのだと感じました。ブランドのイメージとクラフツマンシップだけにフォーカスするのではなく、それぞれの顧客の身体的特徴や性格を反映した、この世にたった一つのガーメントを作る。そんなブリオーニのビスポークサービスは、最初から最後まで非常にスムーズで楽しいものでした。
In closing, Angelo tells me that like a fine wine, a jacket is better two hours later, explaining that the jacket will soften up and take the shape of one’s body over time. With that in mind, I set off for the nearest vinoteca in my beautiful Brioni jacket. Perhaps like Bond, I’ll order a Mouton Rothchild 1953. Cheers.
最後にアンジェロが、ジャケットは、上質のワインのように、着てから（開けてから）2時間後が最高だと教えてくれました。時間が経つと柔らかくなり、体に馴染むからだそうです。それを心に留めて、私はこの美しいブリオーニのジャケットを着て、近くのワインバーに向かいました。ジェームズ・ボンドのように、1953年のシャトー・ムートン・ロートシルトをオーダーしよう。乾杯！

Bespoke lining
The shirring at the sleeve head, achieved by hand sewing, allows for comfort and freedom of movement. It also creates the sublime waterfall effect so coveted by the cognoscenti.
