わずかな腕の動きで巻き上げ安全性も図られた振り子機構
1854年に自身の工房をグラスヒュッテに開設し、ドイツ時計産業の先駆者のひとりとして歴史に名を残すモリッツ・グロスマン。アドルフ・ランゲとも交流があり、1878年にはドイツ時計学校を設立したことでも知られる。2008年、偉大な職人の時計作りを現代に蘇らせるべく、同名のブランドをグラスヒュッテに再興。今回紹介する「ハマティック・ヴィンテージ」は、まさにグロスマン時計の伝統を味わうのにぴったりといえる。
今年発表の新作は、ジャーマンシルバー製のプレートを限りなく黒に近いダークグレーに塗装して、“Black-or”と呼ばれる特殊な鏡面仕上げを施した文字盤を採用。ひと味違う黒の光沢を放つこの文字盤に、1875年にグロスマンが製作した懐中時計に用いたM.GROSSMANNロゴと、わずか幅0.1㎜の手仕上げした針を備え偉大な先人へオマージュを捧げた。
だが本作の最大の個性は、時計を裏返した裏蓋側にある。シースルーバック越しに見えるのは、通常の自動巻きに備わるローターとは違い、巨大な楕円型のハンマーフレーム。このハンマーが着用者の腕の動きに合わせて左右に振れることでゼンマイを巻き上げる振り子式の自動巻き上げ機構なのだ。
19世紀のハンマー式巻き上げ機構に想を得たそのメリットは、ムーブメントの直径を最大限に活かし、支点からハンマー先端までの長い距離が高いトルクを生み出すこと。それはすなわち高度な巻き上げ効率を意味し、ハンマーヘッドがわずか5度（2㎜）動くだけで巻き上げが可能となる。一方、腕の動作が大きいときは、フレーム内に設置されたストップバネがハンマーへの衝撃を吸収することで機構内の安全が確保される。
わずかな動きも巻き上げの動力に変える古典的にして斬新な振り子モデル。伝統的な洋銀プレートやテンプ受けには職人の手による仕上げや装飾も。グラスヒュッテの叡智をつめ込んだ1本だ。
