偉大な創業者の遺志を継ぎ壮大な天体の動きを写し取る
トゥールビヨンが、稀代の天才と謳われる初代アブラアン-ルイ・ブレゲの発明であることは、時計ファンにはよく知られた史実である。現代のブレゲは、その複雑機構を受け継ぎ、進化させてきた。そして2006年、初代の発明を2つ備えるダブル トゥールビヨンが完成。2020年には、ダイヤルを取り払い、その複雑なメカニズムを表側に露わにした。
精巧なムーブメントは、ダイヤルの主役として、ふさわしい。また背面も、ハンドエングレービングによる工芸的な美が表されている。ダイヤル側に見える各パーツは徹底的な手仕上げで最上級の美観を呈し、2つの香箱を支える各ブリッジは流麗なBを象るなど造形にも気配り。精巧さと美しさを兼ね備えたCal.588Nは、ほぼ全容が見えるため、構造が理解しやすい。詳細に観察すれば、2つのトゥールビヨンは、それぞれ専用の香箱と輪列とを備えていると気付く。すなわち、2つのムーブメントが組み込まれているのだ。各トゥールビヨンの調速は、ムーブメント中央に設置したディファレンシャルギアで統合・平均化され、より高い精度をかなえる。
トゥールビヨンを複数備える時計は、他にも存在する。ディファレンシャルギアを用いた機構も、他社にある。しかしブレゲのダブル トゥールビヨンは、さらなる仕掛けを有する唯一無二の存在。なんとムーブメント全体が、12時間で1周するのだ。ムーブメント中央の裏蓋側に設置されたディファレンシャルギア機構は、2つの調速を平均化しながら連結された香箱の巻き戻りを制御する。この機構に遊星歯車を用い、中心に置いた固定歯車に沿ってムーブメント全体を回転させる設計としたのだ。自転する2つのトゥールビヨンは、回転するムーブメントとともに公転もする。渦巻と訳されることが多いトゥールビヨンを、初代ブレゲは天体の動きの意味で用いた。その概念を、現代のブレゲが形にした。
