一流が語る「アテッサ」の魅力 #03/俳優・萩原聖人
俳優・萩原聖人、そしてシチズン アテッサ。ともに1987年にデビューし、35年という時間の中で絶え間ない進化を続けてきた同士が、今、シンクロする。
15歳の少年・萩原聖人が刻んできた35年
「何にも考えていなかったですね。目的も夢もなく、将来何になりたいのかも分からなかった」
今から35年前の1987年、映画『ビー・バップ・ハイスクール』に漠然とした憧れを抱いていた弱冠15歳の少年が、俳優としてデビューを果たした。その名は、萩原聖人。たまたま縁があった映画関係者を通じてドラマにキャスティングされる機会を得る。『あぶない刑事』第32話、迷路。置引する少年役に、全く演技の経験もないままに挑んだ。
「今考えると運と縁、それが全てでした。1作目が『あぶない刑事』だったことがとても大きかった。ど素人の子供なのに、舘ひろしさん、柴田恭平さん、浅野温子さんとの絡みがあって、めちゃくちゃ優しくしていただきました。感動しましたね。その日のことは一生忘れない」
それから35年。様々な役を演じながら進化を続けてきた。その根底には常に“カッコいい”に対するこだわりがあった。しかし、その意識にも徐々に変化が表れたという。
「カッコつける美学って、特に男性には、すごく大事だと思うんです。20代は自信と過信をごちゃ混ぜにしてトンガってたっていうか。でも30代半ばから、自分ではこうだと信じて演じた芝居を見ると全然そう見えていなかったり、一歩間違うと、やればやるほどカッコ悪くなっていったり。俳優は役を通じて勉強して、知ることがたくさんあって、年を重ねて求められるものも変わってくる。そういう中で、客観的な視野が広がったっていうんでしょうか」
50歳という大きな節目を迎えた2021年には、コロナ禍によって中断を余儀なくされた主演映画『島守の塔』の撮影を、苦難を経てクランクアップにこぎ着けた。
「終戦時の沖縄県知事で、沖縄の人々を命を懸けて助けようとした島田 叡（あきら）という人の役だったんです。戦争が最終局面を迎えて、島田さんのところに島の人たちが最後のお礼を言いに来て、歌と踊りをささげるのがラストの撮影シーンでした。それを見ていたら、本当に心が震えて、50年の間に自分の心とか腹の中にたまっていた泥みたいなものが洗い流されるような気持ちになりました。それぐらいこの作品をやり切れたのは大きな、尊いことでした。時代とともに風化し、忘れられ、新しいものに負けてしまうからこそ、少しずつでもそういうものを作品で紡いでいくのも僕らの仕事だなって思います」
