SUV全盛のなか好調なセールスを続けているセダンがボルボ S60だ。ほとんどのタワーパーキングに収まるボディサイズや先進安全装備の充実はもちろんだが、最大のポイントはやはりデザインだろう。端正で伸びやかなボディには無駄なラインや装飾が一切ない。それでいて退屈さとは無縁だし、ボルボであることがひと目でわかる個性もきちんと表現できている。最近のボルボはSUVでも端正な美しさを前面に押し出しているが、セダンやステーションワゴンではその美点がさらに強調されているようにすら感じる。

今回試乗したS60 T6ツインエンジンAWDインスクリプションは、ターボとスーパーチャージャーで過給された2ℓ直4エンジンにモーターを組み合わせた4輪駆動のプラグインハイブリッド車。十分に外部充電しておけばエンジンをかけずにモーターだけで40km程度走行できる。一方、最高出力253PSのエンジンに87PSのモーターが加わり、ドライバーがその気になれば一瞬にしてスポーツセダンへと豹変。環境性能とスポーツ性能の両立ぶりも大きな特徴だ。

クルマがあれば選択肢が一気に広がる温泉巡り

東京都内から草津温泉までは約３時間。スタッドレスタイヤ装着車で向かった。実は草津温泉の標高は１０００～１２００ｍと高く、急な勾配も多い。積雪してないからとノーマルタイヤで訪れて、凍結による事故を起こす人が多いらしく、観光協会も冬は早い時期からのスタッドレスやチェーンの使用を強く推奨しているのだ。予備知識があったので危うい状況はなかったが、確かに無警戒で走るには少々危ない勾配を数ヶ所見つけた。冬に訪れる人は準備をお忘れなく。

さて、ロングドライブを終えて草津温泉の中心地に到着する。真っ先に目に入ったのが、草津温泉のシンボルである「湯畑」である。複数ある源泉のひとつであり、わき上がる湯気や温泉の匂いが訪れる人を出迎える。並べられた湯樋は源泉を加水せずに冷やすため、そして入浴剤などに使われる湯の花を取るためにある。このシンボルを取り囲むように、飲食店や温泉宿、日帰り温泉がずらりと並び、クルマを停めて徒歩で移動できるほど狭いエリアに見所が密集している。この規模感も人気の理由なのだろう。

時間も限られているのでまずは人気の日帰り温泉を楽しむ。500㎡の露天風呂と絶景が楽しめる「西の河原露天風呂」が最初の温泉だ。事前情報では草津温泉は温度が高いとのことだったが、それはまったく気にならない。お湯の素晴らしさ、360度のパノラマで楽しめる絶景をしばし味わう。その時間はまさに至福……にもかかわらず、取材のため、わずかな時間で別の施設を目指す。

次に目指したのは「大滝乃湯」。西の河原露天風呂と同じく草津三湯に数えられる人気の日帰り温泉である。そのお湯は「きかない病気は恋だけ」という言い伝えがあるそうで、草津の名湯を気軽に味わえる。こちらは屋内、露天があり、カフェや食事処もあるので旅の疲れを癒やすのにはもってこいだろう。

草津温泉には、当然日帰り温泉だけでなく、素晴らしい温泉宿もある。お勧めしたいのは「つつじ亭」と「一乃湯」だ。

「つつじ亭」は湯畑から少し離れた場所にある高級旅館である。敷地面積5000坪に対し客室の数はなんと10！　豪華な部屋、温泉、懐石料理が楽しめ、温泉付きの客室や大浴場も用意されている。お風呂を利用させてもらったが、お湯も素晴らしい。

宿泊施設を温泉宿ではなく、ホテルタイプを選びたい人には「一乃湯」。湯畑から徒歩で2分ほどと立地も素晴らしい。10タイプ44室の客室が用意され、自宅のようにくつろぎながら草津温泉の滞在が楽しめる。お湯はもちろん湯畑源泉から引いている。

今回はこれらの人気どころ以外にもいくつかの温泉を巡ってみた。途中で足湯に浸かり、お湯を冷ますために生まれた草津名物の「湯もみ」のショーを堪能し、温泉饅頭や温泉たまごといった名物も楽しむ。ちょっと裏手にまわって源泉も見てみた。なるほど、草津温泉が賑わう理由もよく分かる。どこか拠点となる宿泊地を決めて温泉巡りをすれば１泊２日の日程では足りないくらいだろう。
