“Another thing that I’d like you to really pay attention to, not only with the 66, but also when picking any vintage clothing, is the hem. If the length has been taken up after someone started wearing them, the area around here becomes like brand new. If they are in that state, then half the appeal is lost. Consequently, it is fundamental to not shorten the length after buying [vintage].”

Nishiguchi-san coordinates a Stile Latino double breasted jacket and an Agnes B. border T-shirt, against a pair of just-fitting 66 “Early Period” model jeans. This is mix style in Nishiguchi’s fashion, weaving in old items and new. “I pair blue items a lot with faded jeans,” is how he puts it. While it is a simple outfit that narrows down the number of colors, the unique appearance of the vintage jeans brings out an impressive elegance.

For edition #1 of Shuhei Nishiguchi’s “Vintage Guide for Beginners”, what we want to target first are vintage Levi’s “66 Early Period”!

日本語バージョンはコチラ

If one were to talk about the vintage boom since 1990, what comes to mind are the droves of dandies who adorn the latest media outlets with a distinctive style expressed by their mix of classic clothing.

I expect that even among adults, there are very few whose interests are piqued by a rising passion for vintage. On the other hand, however, there is the world of various vintage know-how necessary to look good and make a good selection. There are lots of times when people don’t know exactly where to start and then get cold feet, altogether. Because of that, Shuhei Nishiguchi, who possesses a deep knowledge of old but gold vintage clothing, is introducing his “Vintage Guide for Beginners”. Lets let him give us a further explanation of how to style those famous vintage pieces you’d love to own.

Nishiguchi’s masterpiece vintage #1
[Levi’s 501 1st half 1966 model]

Shuhei Nishiguchi’s “Vintage Guide for Beginners

“501” is the byword for Levis. The vintage versions are subdivided based upon the special traits of their production periods, and are given nicknames such as “XX”, “Big E”, and “Red Tag”. The 501’s made around 1973-1980 were called the “66” (which, by the way, has nothing to do with the period of their production), and additionally are split into the two categories of “66 Early Period” (around 1973-1978), and ”66 Later Period” (around 1978-1980). However, the transition between the two periods was a gradual one, and I’d like to caution you that there are ambiguous elements about the production periods for each model, as well as exceptions to their typical manufacturing specifications. These 66 Early Period model jeans are renown for creating the entryway into the world of Levis.

NISHIGUCHI EXPLAINS! Grading criteria for the “66 Early Period”

“In contrast with the 501 model manufactured before the 66 model, using a capital letter ‘E’ on the red tab brand label, the 66 Model uses a small letter ‘e’. This is called the “Small e” model and is one of the ways to distinguish manufacturing periods.”

“The 66 model is split into the “early” and “late” models, and when it comes to distinguishing between the periods pay attention to the inside face of the pockets. The ones that have chain stitching just like the hem are from the late period, and the ones that are single needle stitched as in the photo above, fall into the category of early period.”

“If you look closely, you’ll notice that there is a number “6” stamped into the back side of the front button. This, as well, is a unique feature that reveals these are a 66 model. It’s a detail that doesn’t stand out, however, it’s considered an important matter in distinguishing between production eras among people who love vintage.”
