腕に着ける楽しさが味わえる個性派のデザインと表示
2005年に世界初の時計コンセプトラボとしてスタートしたMB&F（マキシミリアン・ブッサー＆フレンズ）。高級時計ブランドで長年責任者を務めたマキシミリアン・ブッサーを中心に、才能ある時計職人やデザイナーらが集まり、先鋭的なコンセプトウォッチを少数生産する。現在はモダンで革新的な「オロロジカルマシン」と、よりクラシカルなラウンド型の「レガシーマシン」の2つのコレクションを中心に展開。そして前者の最新作となるのが「HM10 ブルドッグ」だ。
マキシミリアン・ブッサーが日本滞在時に着想したというこのブルドッグデザインのモデル。アシメトリックで丸みを帯びたレッドゴールドのボディの片側に、ぷっくりと膨らんだサファイアクリスタルを備える。その真下に2本のアームで宙吊りにされたテンプが見え、毎時1万8000振動のロービートを刻む。また2つの
薄いアルミ製のブラックドームが、ブルドッグの両眼のようにこちらを見つめてくる。これらは左が“時”、右が“分”を示す回転式時分表示となっている。
一方、時計を裏返すと、そこにもドーム型のサファイアクリスタルが配され、これを通して鋭い歯をもつブルドッグの口が見える。ヒンジで連結されたこの“口”は、ゼンマイの巻き上げ残量に応じて開閉し、完全に開いて歯が見えていたら巻き上げ完了。すなわち時計の残量時間を示すパワーリザーブ表示なのだ。
さらにボディの四方には、手首にぴったりとフィットする4本の足をセット。この“足”の部分にスプリング式ストラップアタッチメントをあしらったことにより、鼻先から尻尾まで全長54㎜、幅45㎜、厚さは最大24㎜という規格外のサイズにもかかわらず、腕に着けた際に驚くほど快適な装着感を実現している。
デザインも表示スタイルも型破り。だが遊び心に満ちたこのモデルは、時計がただ時を知らせるだけでなく、自由な芸術表現のツールだと気づかせてくれる。
