「サンフランシスコ国際空港」を楽しみ尽くそう！

アメリカ西海岸の玄関口が、サンフランシスコ国際空港（通称SFO）である。

毎年5500万人の旅行者が利用する大型国際空港は、41の国際線航空会社による47以上の海外都市への直行便が運航する。日本、韓国、中国、台湾、シドニーなどアジアからのハブ空港でもあり、ユナイテッド航空からは羽田・成田国際空港からは毎日、関西国際空港から週3日（4月24日からは毎日予定）のサンフランシスコ直行便がアクセスしている。

さらに国内線ターミナルからは12の国内線航空会社により、83以上のアメリカ国内都市への直行便が運航する。

サンフランシスコ国際空港は、国際線ターミナルと第1～第3の全4つのターミナルを要する巨大空港。これだけの大型空港でありながら、歩いていてふと気づくことは、「壁などに大きな宣伝広告がまったくない」ということだ。空港全体をクリーンにするという意識から、景観すらもクリーンにする思い切った取り組み。心地よい気分でターミナル内を歩くことができるのだ。

また、世界初のゼロ・ウェイスト空港を目指すという目標を掲げる同空港では、ペットボトルの水の販売や、テイクアウト用の持ち帰り容器、ストローなどの使い捨て用品が禁止されている。また、ゴミ箱も分別がきちんとなされており、環境問題に積極的に取り組む姿勢が各所で感じられるのが素晴らしい。

また、サンフランシスコ国際空港は、「空港美術館」ともいわれ、4つあるターミナルの各所に美術館や博物館、ギャラリー展示と見どころが並んでいる。
