自社製クロノグラフに積んだ革新的トゥールビヨン
2007年、IWCは待望の自社製クロノグラフ・ムーブメントを完成させた。このモデルのベースでもある、Cal.89000系だ。コラムホイール式の高級機で、クラッチはスイングピニオンによる水平式。IWCのクロノグラフでは初めて、フライバック機構も装備した。自動巻きであり、その巻き上げ機構は巻き上げツメ式だ。そして一番の特徴は、12時位置にある時分同軸積算計。分積算の上限を60分とし、通常の時間を知るのと同じ感覚で、時分の積算が読み取れる。その設計もまた、ユニークだ。一般的にクロノグラフの分・時の各積算計は、クロノグラフ秒針車から中間車を経て、駆動が伝達される。対してIWCは、秒積算計から分・時の積算計を独立させて、香箱から直接駆動力を得る設計とした。これにより、クロノグラフ作動時のトルク落ちが軽減され、時刻表示の精度に悪影響が出ない。
Cal.89000系で元来スモールセコンドがある6時位置にトゥールビヨンを組み込んだのが、本作が搭載するCal.89900である。まず2017年にダ・ヴィンチに積まれ、2020年にポルトギーゼに採用された。そのトゥールビヨンは、独創的な時分同軸積算計クロノグラフと組み合わせるにふさわしい、画期的なメカニズムをもつ。キャリッジの回転は、一般的な1周1分。これが秒針を兼ねているわけだが、針合わせの際にリューズを引くとその回転が止まるのだ。キャリッジを上下から挟み込むようなブレーキシステムにより、ストップセコンド付きのトゥールビヨンは実現された。さらに脱進機のアンクルとガンギ車を、独自のダイヤモンドシェルテクノロジーでコーティング。摩擦を従来より大幅に軽減させることで、駆動効率を高めてもいる。
ダイヤル左サイドには、レトログラード式の日付表示を装備。時分同軸積算と相まって、インダイヤルが整理されてスッキリとしたダイヤルでは、革新的なトゥールビヨンの存在が、より際立つ。
