改良を続けてきたエキシージのハイパワーバージョン

ロータスは、1952年に天才エンジニアのコリン・チャプマンが創業したスポーツカーメーカーだ。スポーツカービジネスというのは実に難しい。そもそも売れる台数には限りがある。近年はポルシェやランボルギーニのようにスポーツカーメーカーがSUVを作ってそちらでしっかりと稼ぎ、スポーツカーを作り続けられる体力を維持するか、量産車メーカーであるフィアットとマツダや、トヨタとBMWのように協業することで、比較的手頃なスポーツカーを作るやり方が主流だ。

ロータスも例に漏れず幾度も経営難を経験し、さまざまな企業の傘下に収まってきた。現在はボルボなどを傘下におく中国のジーリーの小会社となっている。それでも創業当初のコンセプトを変えることなく、約70年にわたってひたすらにピュアなスポーツカーを作り続けている稀有な存在だ。

現行のモデルラインナップは、最軽量クラスの「エリーゼ」、パワフルな「エキシージ」、4シーターGTカー「エヴォーラ」の3本柱だ。モデルごとにサーキット仕様などいくつかのグレードが設定されており、バリエーションは豊富だ。今回の試乗車は、2012年にシリーズ3としてデビューし、約8年にわたって改良を重ねてきた「エキシージ」のハイパワーバージョン「スポーツ410」だった。

くびれのある抑揚のきいたエクステリアデザインゆえ大きく見えるが、実際、全長は4080mm、全幅1800mmと今どきのサイズ感でいえばコンパクトだ。全高は1130mmと低く、そして車両重量は1110kgととても軽い。

パワートレインは、最高出力416ps、最大トルクは410Nmを発揮するトヨタ製3.5リッターV6エンジン＋スーパーチャージャーに、6速マニュアルトランスミッションを組み合わせる。最高速は290km/hに到達するという。

スターターボタンを押すと、チタン製のエキゾーストシステムが高めの排気音を放ちエンジンが目覚める。アルミ削り出しで、内部構造が見えるマニュアルシフトレバーを1速に入れて走り出す。低速からぶ厚いトルクが出るタイプではないが、神経質になるほどでもない。そして3000回転を超えたあたりから猛烈に加速する。そして7000回転まで一気に吹け上がる。正直に言えば、公道ではその速さをもてあます。
